Liverpool FC line up Bundesliga star as Piotr Zielinski alternative

Liverpool could be set to reignite their interest in Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Mahmoud Dahoud.

Syrian-born Dahoud was initially targeted as part of Jurgen Klopp’s summer revamp of the Anfield playing staff, however, a move for the highly-rated midfielder was put on hold as the Reds boss focused his efforts on landing Piotr Zielinski.

Zielinski, 22, has spent this season on loan at Serie A side Empoli and looks set to leave current club Udinese this summer.

But while it had been thought that the energetic midfielder was Anfield bound following reports in his homeland of an impending move, the Daily Telegraph claim the deal’s progress has since stalled, with Klopp now pursuing alternative options.

That has led to a renewed interest in Dahoud as a fall-back option to the Poland international

The 20-year-old is one of the hottest properties in the Bundesliga, scoring five goals for the Champions League-bound side this campaign.

And Germany legend Lothar Matthaus recently spoke in glowing terms of the box-to-box player’s ability.

He said: “Dahoud has a lot of potential.

“We all know that Gladbach nurture talents who can become world-class stars.”

It remains to be seen if Monchengldbach would welcome a bid from Liverpool for their prized asset, with Dahoud’s midfield partner, Granit Xhaka, set for a summer move to Premier League rivals Arsenal in the coming weeks.
