Liverpool target Tottenham star as Can fallback

Liverpool are tracking Victor Wanyama amid uncertainty over Emre Can’s future.

Can is now in the final months of his current deal at Anfield and currently free to negotiate a free transfer away from his current club this summer.

Juventus and former club Bayern Munich were both rumoured to be monitoring the situation with the Germany international.

A direct replacement for Can will likely be targeted, irrespective of Naby Keita’s impending arrival from RB Leipzig at the end of this season.

According to the Daily Mail, Tottenham’s Wanyama could become the preferred candidate to succeed the potentially outgoing midfielder.

Several Premier League sides are watching the Kenya international, with Chelsea and Manchester United also credited as viable suitors.

Liverpool’s prospective pursuit of Wanyama has already seen him name-checked by Steven Gerrard as a potential fit at Anfield earlier this week.

“I think Liverpool would benefit from a monster of a central midfielder, a holder,” said Gerrard.

“A Wanyama-type player who does sit in and is disciplined, and he would give more protection to the back four.

“Emre Can’s leaving, obviously Keita’s coming in. But Keita is a No 8, Keita is a dribbler, and a runner.

“The way he (Jurgen Klopp) plays he plays 4-3-3 more often than not. So you can accommodate a [Jordan] Henderson and a Keita.”
