Giroud ‘very close’ to joining Everton in summer

Olivier Giroud admits he was ‘very close’ to joining Everton this summer.

Ronald Koeman identified the Arsenal striker as the Blues’ preferred replacement for Romelu Lukaku, who had joined Manchester United.

Giroud was in line for a move to Goodison Park at a time of growing uncertainty for him following the Gunners’ signing of Alexandre Lacazette.

The France international has yet to start a Premier League game for Arsenal this season with only a handful of first-team appearances in cup competitions.

But Giroud, 31, believes he made the right decision to turn down Everton in favour of remaining with the north London side.

“I was very close to signing for another English club, Everton,” he told Canal Football.

“But I made the best choice I think.

“I stayed because I have a certain attachment to the club, quite simply.

“I am content to have remained. I am well in my head and in my boots.”
