Everton FC eye Premier League striker as Giroud backup

Everton are targeting Islam Slimani as an alternative to Olivier Giroud.

Steve Walsh recommended the Algeria international to Leicester City prior to taking Goodison Park’s newly formed director of football role last summer.

But Slimani could soon follow the one-time Foxes’ talent spotter to Merseyside as Ronald Koeman is eyeing the 29-year-old with the Blues’ interest in Giroud cooling.

Giroud appeared set to seal a move to Everton as Arsenal’s signing of Alexandre Lacazette last month pushed the France striker down his side’s pecking order.

However Arsene Wenger continues to insist that he plans to keep Giroud at the Emirates Stadium, making his departure look unlikely to happen this summer.

As a result, Everton have been considering potential alternatives with Slimani emerging as the most viable option despite a likely £30 million price tag.

The 29-year-old scored seven goals and provided four assists in his 13 games of debut season at Leicester.
