Liverpool have reportedly failed in their attempts to land Kylian Mbappe.
The young striker is enjoying a prodigious breakthrough year, scoring 24 times in 40 appearances for Monaco as they strolled to the Ligue 1 title this season.
A host of elite European clubs have been linked with moves for Mbappe in the summer transfer window but the Reds have attempted to steal an early march.
According to Marca, Anfield officials submitted a formal offer of €75 million (£64m) in a bid to persuade Monaco to part with the 18-year-old marksman.
But the French club have turned down the approach with a view to retaining the player but are said to be open to offers far higher than that tabled by Liverpool.
Paul Pogba’s record-breaking £89m move to Manchester United last summer is said to be the barometer for Monaco’s asking price should they sell Mbappe.
