Real Madrid targeting Liverpool FC defender

Liverpool defender Joe Gomez has emerged as a shock target for Real Madrid.

Gomez recently made his long-awaited return from injury following a 15-month lay off with three outings for the Reds this season, all in the FA Cup.

Jurgen Klopp has also called on the versatile defender as an unused substitute in three other games, including January’s Premier League clash with Manchester United.

But reports in Spain claim that Gomez is attracting interest from the reigning European champions as one of several potential targets on their wish list.

According to Diario Gol, Real manager Zinedine Zidane has identified the 19-year-old amid concerns over several of his first-team mainstays.

The former France international is said to be keen on Gomez, a £3.5 million signing from Charlton Athletic in 2015, as he looks to overhaul Real’s squad.

A host of Galacticos including Pepe, James Rodriguez and Karim Benzema are said to be facing uncertain futures at the Bernabeu Stadium this summer.

United goalkeeper David de Gea, Tottenham’s Dele Alli and Borussia Dortmund forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang are also listed as potential replacements.

Gomez recently signed a new five-year contract with Liverpool.
