Steven Gerrard identifies Liverpool FC transfer target

Steven Gerrard believes Liverpool need to sign Southampton full-back Virgil van Dijk.

Van Dijk continues to be linked with a move away from St Mary’s despite the South Coast club expected to demand a £40 million price tag for the defender.

Five players have previously joined the Reds from Southampton over the past three years, costing Anfield chiefs close to £100 million in the process.

Local rivals Everton and Manchester City are both said to be in the hunt for Van Dijk, who signed a new six-year contract with the Saints last summer.

And while Gerrard admits it may prove an unpopular view, the new Liverpool youth coach feels that Jurgen Klopp should target the Holland international.

“Who I think we need, I would go and try and bid for Van Dijk from Southampton,” he told BT Sport.

“But we’ve had enough of their players so that will probably go down like a lead balloon.”
