Liverpool are targeting Emil Forsberg as an alternative to Christian Pulisic.
Jurgen Klopp had hoped to return to former club Borussia Dortmund in January to capture American teenager Pulisic but was left frustrated in his efforts.
An £11 million bid was rejected last sumer by the Bundesliga side while their sporting director Michael Zorc last month issued a hands-off warning to the Reds.
With a deal for Pulisic appearing unlikely, Liverpool have turned their attention to Forsberg after his exploits helped propel RB Leipzig to second in the Bundesliga.
According to the Sunday Mirror, Klopp is a long-term admirer of the Sweden international dating back to his time in charge at Signal Iduna Park.
Forsberg’s agent recently revealed that Liverpool were among a host of clubs pursuing the £20m-rated midfielder.
