Liverpool FC set to work with Manchester United after UEFA charges

Liverpool will liaise with Manchester United to address UEFA charges brought against them following last night’s Europa League win.

Ugly scenes marred the second leg of the Reds’ last 16 encounter at Old Trafford, with four visiting fans arrested for disorder offences by police while the club itself has been charged by European football’s governing body over the conduct of its supporters.

Charges for object-throwing, the illegal use of pyrotechnics and illicit chanting are among the Anfield club’s rap sheet while a delayed kick-off time in the second half has also been levelled at Jurgen Klopp’s side, who progressed with a 3-1 aggregate victory.

“We take these matters seriously and can confirm that we have received a letter from UEFA relating to infringements at last night’s match which we will be reviewing,” confirmed a Liverpool spokesman.

“We will address the issues with UEFA and Manchester United and make any relevant representation as part of the process.”

United have also been charged following missile throwing between the two sets of fans as well as for crowd disturbances and blocking stairways, but the decision to exonerate illicit chanting by the Red Devils fans has prompted accusations of inconsistency on UEFA’s part.

Taunts relating to the Hillsborough disaster went unpunished after they were aired during last week’s first leg at Anfield, with United publicly condemning the actions.

Both Liverpool and United will have their cases heard by UEFA on May 19.
