Liverpool have launched an investigation after a first-team player appeared to mock the Munich air disaster following last night’s Europa League win over Manchester United.
It is understood the club are aware of the allegations against Jordan Williams and will follow their usual procedure of investigating before making any public comment.
A tweet from sent from the 20-year-old’s Twitter account responded to a video of fans celebrating inside Old Trafford and included an aeroplane emoji, believed to be in reference to the 1958 tragedy which cost the lives of eight United players and 15 others, and pair of hands clapping.
The tweet was quickly deleted and Williams later apologised, claiming his account had been compromised.
“My Twitter has been hacked, I would never put anything like that to offend anyone, sorry about this,” he posted. The account was subsequently deleted by the player, currently on loan at Swindon Town.
Tensions between fans had been high within the ground. as five people were arrested following ugly scenes.
The news comes as UEFA announced that both clubs would be charged with crowd disturbances and throwing of objects.
Liverpool have also been charged with illicit chants and the setting off fireworks.
