Liverpool will end the uncertainty over Jon Flanagan’s future by handing the defender a new three-year deal.
Flanagan’s long-term prospects had appeared precarious following an 18-month lay-off with a knee injury that threatened to see him leave the Reds when his current contract expired at the end of this season.
But the home-grown full-back, a key performer in the club’s Premier League title challenge in the 2013-14 season, is now set to extend his stay with an extension which will take him through to summer 2019 after impressing Jurgen Klopp following his return to first-team action.
The Liverpool manager resisted the temptation to include Flanagan in his squad for the Europa League knock-out stages due to concerns of overplaying him so soon after recovering from a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
Talks between the player’s representatives and chief executive Ian Ayre have since progressed to safeguard the Anfield academy product’s future.
