Liverpool fan groups to remove Anfield banners

Liverpool fans are set to remove flags from Anfield in protest at the club’s decision to join a European Super League.

Since the coronavirus pandemic, banners have been laid on The Kop for all bar three home games this season, when 2,000 fans were allowed to attend.

But Reds supporters have taken the decision to withdraw their visual support for the Premier League champions after they signed up for a Super League.

It means Saturday’s visit of Newcastle United will mark the first time in recent memory flags or banners have not been present at Anfield on match days.

Spion Kop 1906, who have organised the display of flags and banners, confirmed: “We, along with other groups involved in flags, will be removing our flags from The Kop.

“We feel we can no longer give our support to a club which puts financial greed above integrity of the game.”

The planned breakaway from the Champions League, which includes clubs from England, Spain and Italy, has been widely condemned across football.

Current and former players as well as fans and governing bodies such as UEFA, FIFA and the Premier League have all denounced the proposals.

Spirit of Shankly also issued a brief statement also lamenting the actions of club owners Fenway Sports Group in signing up to the controversial plan.

“As fan representatives we are appalled and completely oppose this decision,” they said.

“FSG have ignored fans in their relentless and greedy pursuit of money.

“Football is ours – not theirs. Our football club is ours, not theirs.

“We will respond fully to this statement in due course.”
