Liverpool FC striker nominated for Golden Boy award

Liverpool striker Ben Woodburn has been named on the shortlist for the European Golden Boy award.

The 17-year-old became the Reds’ youngest-ever goal scorer in opening his account earlier this season against Leeds United in the EFL Cup.

Since then he has made semi-regular appearances for Jurgen Klopp’s side and was chosen to lead the line in last weekend’s win at Stoke City.

Woodburn is the sixth Liverpool player in the last four seasons to be nominated for the award established and run by Italian sports newspaper Tuttosport.

Raheem Sterling beat off competition from the likes of Max Meyer, Aymeric Laporte and Kingsley Coman to take the accolade to Anfield in 2014.

He also finished ahead of erstwhile team mates Divock Origi and Lazar Markovic as well as Tottenham’s Eric Dier and Manchester United’s Adnan Januzaj.

Tiago Ilori was Liverpool’s sole representative in the 2013 shortlist while Marko Grujic was the most recent nominee in last year’s shortlist but lost out to Renato Sanches.

Monaco’s Kylian Mbappe and Borussia Dortmund pair Christian Pulisic and Ousmane Dembele are all set to vie with Woodburn for the Golden Boy.

Competition from the Premier League will be similarly fierce, with Everton’s Tom Davies and Manchester City wonder kid Gabriel Jesus also firmly in contention.
