Liverpool midfielder James Milner will captain England in tonight’s friendly tie against the Netherlands.
The 30-year-old will stand in for injured team captain Wayne Rooney at Wembley as Roy Hodgson’s side continue their Euro 2016 preparations.
The decision to name Milner as temporary skipper follows the midfielder’s admission that he will consider his international future beyond this summer’s finals in France.
He said: “I don’t want to be travelling the world and not really contributing and just being a good tourist.
“I want to contribute and if the manager says that is I have a part to play then great.”
With 57 caps to his name, Milner is currently the most internationally experienced player in Roy Hodgson’s squad.
Milner made his England debut in August 2009, coincidentally also against the Netherlands, and his first time wearing the armband came in November 2010 versus France.
