UEFA probe Manchester United fans’ Hillsborough chants in Liverpool FC clash

Manchester United could face disciplinary action after UEFA launched an investigation into illicit chants aired during their Europa League clash with Liverpool.

The Old Trafford club were hit with sanctions for failing to control their supporters in the last 16 encounter between the sides last week while the Reds faced charges over songs aired by their travelling fans in addition to other disorder offences.

But while United originally escaped recriminations following taunts relating to the Hillsborough which were aired last Thursday as well as during the first leg at Anfield, European football’s governing body are now set to probe the incidents relating to both games.

“UEFA has recently been made aware of several reports concerning alleged illicit chanting on the occasion of the UEFA Europa League ties between Liverpool FC and Manchester United FC of 10 and 17 March 2016,” a UEFA statement confirmed.

“As a result, a UEFA ethics and disciplinary inspector decided to investigate further and gather potential evidence.

“The two clubs have thus been asked to provide statements relating to the alleged incidents within 10 days.”
