Jagielka backs Wayne Rooney’s Everton FC homecoming bid

Everton captain Phil Jagielka has added his voice to the backing of a potential homecoming for Wayne Rooney.

A prospective return to Goodison Park was recently mooted amid speculation that Rooney’s future at Manchester United appeared closer to an end.

Several current Blues personnel have tipped the 31-year-old to rejoin the ranks at Goodison Park, including left-back Luke Garbutt and Everton legend turned club ambassador Graeme Sharp.

Ronald Koeman has also made no secret that he was in favour of Rooney making a prospective return to his boyhood club in the near future.

And Jagielka has also backed the England captain to win back Everton supporters still smarting from his 2004 defection to Old Trafford.

“Wayne is an Evertonian and I’m sure the fans would take to him again,” he told the Sunday Mirror.

“He has built the bridges that he potentially burnt many, many years ago when he was a young lad and I would say you’ll just have to watch this space.

“Wayne has got a long contract at Man United. He’s still their captain and because he’s not playing at the moment doesn’t mean he’s not a massive part of their team.

“Maybe a fresh start somewhere would help him or maybe he’s a game away from being a hero again.”
