Ross Barkley leads tributes to late Everton FC scout Sid Benson

Everton have confirmed that esteemed scout Sid Benson has passed away.

The former talent spotter died yesterday at the age of 74 and was influential in beginning the careers of several Blues players, both past and present.

Ross Barkley was among those identified by Benson at an early age and led the tributes to his former mentor last night on Twitter.

“Sad to hear Sid Benson has passed away today, only spoke to him last night,” he wrote.

“Rest in peace mate, thanks for everything.”

During his time at Everton, Benson was also responsible for bringing the likes of Francis Jeffers and Danny Cademateri into the club’s academy ranks.

Leighton Baines was also an early beneficiary as Benson helped him secure a place at Wigan after originally being released by his boyhood club.
