Everton are closing in on a deal for Lyon defender Jake O’Brien.
The Republic of Ireland international has attracted interest from a host of Premier League clubs including Wolves, Brentford and Nottingham Forest.
But Sean Dyche’s side are now set to steal a march on their top-flight peers by entering into advanced negotiations to sign the highly rated centre-back.
O’Brien moved to the Groupama Stadium last summer after a two-year spell with Crystal Palace and helped Les Gones reach the Coupe de France final.
The 23-year-old made 32 outings for Pierre Sage’s side in all competitions as they qualified for the Europa League group stage after a difficult campaign.
He is set to become the sixth arrival at Goodison Park and will offer fresh options at the heart of defence amid injury doubts over James Tarkowski.
Tarkowski flew home ahead of the Blues’ pre-season draw with Sligo Rovers due to a glute issue and failed to feature in Saturday’s trip at Salford City.
