Everton have sent a message of support to ex-striker Kevin Campbell.

Campbell became a cult hero during a six-year spell at Goodison Park which secured the club’s Premier League status with 39 goals in 151 appearances.

The 54-year-old also scored the winning goal in the 1999 Merseyside derby, which was only broken as the Blues’ last win at Anfield in February 2021.

Following reports that Campbell is seriously ill in hospital, Goodison chiefs issued a heartfelt statement on Sunday to the marksman and his family.

“We have been made aware our former striker Kevin Campbell is currently very unwell,” confirmed a club statement.

“Not just a great footballer but an incredible person, Kevin is, and always has been, a fighter and we wish him and his family well at this challenging time.

“Sending all our love.”
