Garner ‘concerned’ by Everton lack of goals

James Garner admits that Everton’s goal shortage is becoming a ‘concern’.

Sean Dyche’s side moved out of the Premier League’s relegation zone on Monday courtesy of their late draw with a struggling Crystal Palace.

An ongoing issue for the Blues has been their lack of goal scoring threat, with lead striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin failing to hit the target in his last 19 games.

But Garner believes that a lack of potency in all areas of the pitch is becoming an issue rather than just the Everton No.9’s well-documented tribulations.

He said: “I think it is a concern if you are not scoring goals, as goals win games.

“But it is not just the strikers who we should be relying on to score goals.

“We can’t just be relying on the strikers to score; we need to be chipping in from all places.

“But it is a bit of a concern if we are not putting the ball in the back of the net when we should be.”

This week Everton hope to hear the outcome of their appeal against the 10-point deduction that keeps them in the relegation battle instead of 12th place.

And Garner concedes that the lack of clarity over the matter has preoccupied his own thoughts while the lengthy wait for the official verdict continues.

“Personally, it plays on my mind,” added the midfielder.

“Without the 10-point deduction, we would be much higher in the league table so whenever that comes in, I will be waiting.

“We just need to keep ourselves above that dotted line, and hopefully when the results of the appeal come back, we are much higher up the table.”
