Everton FC: Ronald Koeman targets a return to Goodison Park glory days

Ronald Koeman has set his sights on restoring Everton to the status of its glorious past.

The Dutchman, 53, was confirmed as Roberto Martinez’s successor on Tuesday, signing a three-year deal as the Blues seek the usher in a new era under Farhad Moshiri’s premiership.

Everton’s new majority shareholder is targeting an end to Everton’s 21-year silverware drought and Koeman, who faced the club as a player during the time of that last triumph in 1995, is intent on sparking the renaissance of England’s fourth most successful club.

He said: “It was amazing when I had the first contact with the chairman and Farhad Moshiri about their interest.

“I was interested to listen and to hear about their big project, their vision which they want over the coming seasons. Of course, I am pleased to be part of that – it’s really enjoyable.

“The ambition is always to give the fans spirit so they can see the team is fighting for everything and we want to try to play good football.

“They are the basics for what you need to get good results. Being a footballer these days isn’t like being a player 20 or 30 years ago because it’s a really tough job and you have to be disciplined and live for it.

“Everton have a big history and we will do everything we can to try to reach what was reached in the past.

“That is difficult but I believe with all of the people involved at Everton and with the fans that anything is possible.”
