Graeme Sharp has claimed Everton fan protests ‘have been over the top’.

Sharp was one of four members of the Goodison Park hierarchy to miss last weekend’s defeat to Southampton on alleged threats to its personal security.

Supporters stayed behind for a peaceful post-match demonstration, which is set to be repeated following Arsenal’s visit in the February 4 encounter.

It was claimed Denise Barrett-Baxendale had been placed in a headlock by a fan despite Merseyside Police confirming it received no report of the incident.

Sharp joined chairman Bill Kenwright, CEO Barrett-Baxendale and majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri in attending Saturday’s 2-0 loss to West Ham.

But the ex-Blues’ striker spoke out about the previous situation in an interview with The Mirror, published shortly after the result at the London Stadium.

“It was a sad day for the club,” said Sharp.

“It’s still uncertain whether we will get the go-ahead to attend the next home game against Arsenal on February 4.

“No one could ever have envisaged things getting to this state where you are actually in physical danger.

“I don’t want to miss games, Everton is in my blood.

“Of course, fans can have their say and I can understand the frustrations, but some of the protests have gone over the top.

“For instance, no one works harder than Denise. In addition to the day-to-day running of the club, she is also working tirelessly on the new stadium.

“For her to be targeted is so unfair.”

Sharp also referenced events outside Goodison following the Saints’ win in which small groups of Evertonians remonstrated with some first-team players.

He added: “The club is in turmoil.

“It needs unity with everyone working hard for the cause, supporters included.

“Surely no one wants to see scenes again where players have their cars kicked.

“It’s really disappointing when I’m advised not to attend a home game because of safety issues.

“We will now have to see what transpires in the next week or so before Arsenal arrive at Goodison.”
