Everton are set to be without Alex Iwobi for up to three weeks.

Iwobi was stretchered off with ankle ligament damage during a 3-1 loss to Manchester United for Frank Lampard’s side in Friday’s FA Cup third round.

The Nigeria international later left Old Trafford on crutches following the challenge from Tyrell Malacia early in the second half of Friday’s encounter.

Goodison Park officials confirmed on Sunday that Iwobi’s lay-off will be less than initially feared, with the midfielder potentially back later this month.

“Alex Iwobi is expected to be out for around three weeks with the ankle ligament injury sustained against Manchester United on Friday,” read a club statement.

“The Everton midfielder was taken off on a stretcher early in the second half of the FA Cup tie at Old Trafford.

“Scan results on Saturday confirmed a lateral ligament injury that will be managed conservatively by the club’s medical team at Finch Farm.”

Everton will now finish a 28th successive season without silverware despite producing a spirited performance against a currently high-flying Red Devils.

Antony opened the scoring for the hosts within three minutes before Conor Coady equalised as David de Gea fumbled Neal Maupay’s cross into his path.

Lampard’s side were undone again early in the second half when Coady had sliced an attempted clearance into his own net to restore United’s lead.

Everton appeared to have snatched a deserved equaliser in the game’s final quarter when Dominic Calvert-Lewin converted a cutback from Demarai Gray.

But the goal was disallowed by referee Darren England upon a VAR review as Gray was adjudged to be offside in the build-up of the well-worked move.

Marcus Rashford added a third deep into stoppage time from the penalty spot after Ben Godfrey clumsily brought down Alejandro Garnacho in the area.
