Everton have recalled Ellis Simms from his loan spell with Sunderland.
Simms moved to the Stadium of Light on a season-long agreement but will return to his parent club on Sunday after they exercised the recall clause.
Frank Lampard admitted before his side’s trip to Manchester City that he was considering the 21-year-old’s return to provide further attacking options.
The Blues’ first-choice striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin is back in contention for the clash at the Etihad Stadium but has struggled to play regularly this term.
Simms scored seven goals in 17 Championship appearances for Sunderland.
“Ellis’ return to Merseyside is a real disappointment for us due to the shared progress that he and the club have made this season,” said the Black Cats’ sporting director Kristjaan Speakman
“Unfortunately, this is the nature of loans when they are successful, but it is a testament to Tony Mowbray and the wider staff – and of course to Ellis – that Everton feel he is ready to continue his immediate development in a Premier League environment.
“We all wish Ellis the very best and thank him for the part he has played in our continual progression as a football club.”
