Queen’s death halts Everton’s trip to Arsenal

Everton’s trip to Arsenal has been postponed after Queen Elizabeth II’s death.

The Premier League confirmed on Friday morning that all of its upcoming weekend fixtures were suspended as a mark of respect to the late monarch.

Sunday’s opening WSL fixture between the Blues and Leicester City at Walton Hall Park has also been postponed in line with a period of national mourning.

“Everton Football Club is deeply saddened at the passing of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II,” confirmed a club statement.

“Queen Elizabeth II was the longest-serving monarch in British history and, in her honour, flags at both Goodison Park and Walton Hall Park are being flown at half-mast.

“As a mark of respect, this weekend’s match round of Premier League and Women’s Super League fixtures have been postponed.

“Further information on the rearrangement of fixtures will be provided in due course.”

Plans for the Queen’s state funeral could lead to further upheaval to fixtures, with next weekend’s visit of West Ham United also at risk of cancellation.

Should Everton’s Goodison Park showdown also be deferred, the first available midweek date to play either game would be mid-January next year.

Owing to the forthcoming World Cup and various domestic and European cup commitments, the earliest free midweek will be January 17 and 18, 2023.
