Everton FC trio named in Ireland’s Euro 2016 squad

James McCarthy has shaken off a niggling hamstring complaint to be included in Ireland’s squad for this summer’s European Championships.

The tireless 25-year-old defensive midfielder joins Everton teammates Seamus Coleman and Aiden McGeady in Martin O’Neill’s 23-man group for the month-long tournament in France following yesterday’s announcement.

But fellow Blue Darron Gibson misses out after failing to impress in Tuesday night’s friendly defeat to Belarus.

Ireland, who have been placed in a troublesome-looking group E, start their campaign on June 13 against Zlatan Ibrahmovic’s Sweden, before facing Belgium five days later and culminating with a June 22 encounter with Italy.

Former Blue Shane Duffy has also been included in the travelling party after an impressive season for Championship side Blackburn Rovers.
