An Everton fan has been arrested for throwing a bottle at Aston Villa players.

Lucas Digne and Matty Cash were struck on the head by what appeared to be a full bottle of Lucozade in the first half of Saturday’s game at Goodison Park.

The incident took place after Emiliano Buendia scored the only goal of the game as the visitors condemned the Blues to a third straight league defeat.

Goodison chiefs confirmed shortly after the match that police identified and detained the person responsible for launching the object via CCTV footage.

“Everton security staff and Merseyside Police identified the supporter using CCTV footage,” read a club statement.

“Several objects were thrown towards the pitch following Aston Villa’s goal at the end of the first half, with one missile appearing to strike two opposition players.

“Investigations in conjunction with the police are ongoing, and the club will issue bans to any fans identified throwing objects.”

Everton’s caretaker manager Duncan Ferguson condemned the incident when questioned about the projectile throwing in his post-match press conference.

He said: “I never saw the incident but I have been told about it.

“It is bang out of order.

“That is not the way to do things. That is totally wrong.”
