Everton medical chief leaves after review

Dan Donachie has left his post as Everton’s director of medical services.

Donachie spent two spells at Goodison Park, working under three managers between 2001 and 2015 before returning in 2018 after a stint at Aston Villa.

The 45-year-old, who is the son of former Blues’ assistant Willie Donachie, departs following an internal review of the club’s medical department.

Rafael Benitez recently drafted in several of his ex-Newcastle United allies into Everton’s backroom setup including rehabilitation coach Cristian Fernandez.

The former Liverpool manager alluded to the club’s mounting injury situation when discussing Fabian Delph after last weekend’s stalemate with Tottenham.

“He (Delph) has been working with the new rehabilitation coach and came in stronger,” said Benitez.

“But we have to know he’s had injuries in the past and had 10 weeks off the pitch, so it’s important to keep him fit so he can give us different options in the centre of the pitch.”

Donachie confirmed his impending exit from Merseyside in a social media post on Thursday that paid tribute to numerous colleagues both past and present.

He wrote: “Too many life long friends to mention. You know who you are.

“I have been inspired by all of you time after time. My spirit will never be the same.

“What an incredible privilege to have been a custodian of this great club for so long.

“Separated by distance but never heart.”
