Everton have signed ex-Liverpool goalkeeper Andy Lonergan on a one-year deal.
Lonergan becomes the fourth signing of Rafael Benitez’s tenure and the second stopper to move to Goodison Park this summer following Asmir Begovic’s arrival.
A training ground injury to teenager Harry Tyrer coupled with third-choice option Joao Virginia set to head out on loan led to the 37-year-old’s surprise arrival.
Lonergan is now embarking on his 15th club of a 21-year career in professional football which has seen him represent clubs throughout the English pyramid.
Last season he spent spells with Stoke City and West Bromwich Albion, having served as a backup at Anfield during their title-winning campaign of 2019/20.
“He’s a player that can give us some experience as we needed to sort out this problem, just in case,” said Benitez.
“We have a new signing, but maybe it’s a player nobody was expecting.”
