Rafael Benitez has called for unity after being named Everton manager.
Benitez became the Blues’ fifth managerial appointment in as many years on Wednesday when he was officially unveiled as Carlo Ancelotti’s successor.
The 61-year-old signed a three-year deal at Goodison Park, making him the first coach since W.E. Barclay in 1892 to take charge of both Merseyside clubs.
But Benitez’s previous links with Liverpool and calling his new employers a ‘small club’ while at Anfield has seen him face backlash from supporters.
Banners were hung outside Goodison in opposition to the Spaniard while one declaring ‘we know where you live’ was posted close to his Wirral home.
Merseyside Police confirmed on Monday they are investigating the latter incident, despite the painted message being left outside the wrong address.
Despite the strong emotions his appointment has generated, Benitez used his inaugural address to appeal for fans to unite behind him and their team.
He said: “I know what it means for Evertonians.
“I know what it means for people in the city and the passion they have. I think it is crucial for us to have the fans behind us.
“This year, with the pandemic, has been very difficult and football without the fans is totally different.
“I was following the form of Everton [last season] and obviously away from home they have been fine but not so good at home.
“Why? Because they didn’t have the fans behind. It is crucial.
“I am expecting the fans – and I know all the things that people talk about – but I am expecting the fans after one year of not going to the stadium to go and stay behind the team.
“We need the fans behind the team and I think they will be.”
Benitez is preparing to finalise his Everton backroom staff, which will include Ancelotti’s assistant Duncan Ferguson and goalkeeping coach Alan Kelly.
Further additions will be confirmed in the coming days with Paco de Miguel, who worked with Benitez at several clubs expected to be among them.
Everton’s players are due to report back for pre-season training on Monday.
