Shani Tarashaj has left Everton after a loan deal was prematurely ended.
Tarashaj became one of Roberto Martinez’s last signings as Blues boss when he joined from Grasshopper Zurich in January 2016 for around £3 million.
The Swiss international was due to leave Goodison Park last summer but saw his contract extended by 12 months to facilitate a loan move to FC Emmen.
However the Dutch side confirmed on Tuesday that they have chosen to terminate the original two-year arrangement earlier than scheduled.
“For both parties his time in Emmen went differently than hoped for, due to injuries, the five-time international of Switzerland has never been able to show his talent with the first team at De Oude Meerdijk,” read a statement.
“Shani got no further than a few minutes in FC Emmen 2, as he managed to score in the match against Cambuur 2 last season.
“We wish Shani the best of luck in the rest of his career.”
Now 25, Tarashaj represented his country at Euro 2016 but failed to make a competitive appearance for Everton during his four-year spell with the club.
Prior to joining Emmen, he had returned to old club Grasshopper on loan and spent the 2016/17 campaign in the Bundesliga with Eintracht Frankfurt.
Although Everton are yet to comment on Tarashaj’s future, the player confirmed his departure in a farewell message posted on his Twitter account.
“Thank you to everyone at Everton football club,” he wrote.
“I was always made to feel welcome by the club and by the people of Liverpool.
“Wishing you well for the season and for the future.”
