Ancelotti shuns Everton mid-winter break

Carlo Ancelotti insists Everton will not take part in warm weather training during their mid-winter break.

Ancelotti’s side are set to face a 15-day gap between their games next month due to the new ruling implemented by the Premier League this season.

Previous Blues manager took advantage of the chance to escape to sunnier climes on account of a lull in fixtures brought on by early FA Cup exits.

But Ancelotti has refused to decamp his squad from their Finch Farm training base for their preparations ahead of a trip to Arsenal on February 23.

He said: “The plan for the winter break is to give some rest to the players, maybe four or five days, then start to train here.

“I want to stay here in Finch Farm because we have a fantastic training ground.

“We don’t need to move around the world to travel, it’s better to stay here.”

The Everton manager also added his backing to calls to hand Dominic Calvert-Lewin a senior England call-up in March’s friendlies with Italy and Denmark.

Calvert-Lewin’s prospects have been improved by injuries sidelining both Harry Kane and Marcus Rashford in the months leading up to Euro 2020.

“Of course he can play. He showed a lot of quality in the last game, he can play for England, no doubt about this,” added Ancelotti.

“England has fantastic strikers, he has to fight but he has the quality and possibility to be a great striker in England and for England.

‘Dominic is doing really well, he has to keep going, he is showing good qualities in this moment, his feeling in this period is really good.

“I don’t have to tell [Gareth] Southgate to look at Dominic because he already did this. Southgate has his own right to decide.”
