Duncan Ferguson has backed Moise Kean to improve in his Everton career.
Kean suffered the ignominy of being substituted during the Blues’ draw at Manchester United last weekend, barely 20 minutes after coming on.
But the Italy international’s second-half cameo in Wedneday’s Carabao Cup tie with Leicester City. offered signs for optimism he worked tirelessly up front.
Ferguson has worked with Kean since his £29 million move from Juventus last summer and believes the teenager’s development only will improve over time.
He said: “I’ve worked with Moise Kean for month now since he came to the club, behind the scenes. As a first team coach that’s what you do.
“I thought his performance was better against Leicester. He contributed and he can be happy with that. He’s got to work on a lot in his game.
“But he’s a young lad and he’ll come [on] again and we’re here to help him.
“Obviously coming to England it’s a big step up physically. He’s only 19 so he’ll fill out and he’ll improve as he goes along.”
Ferguson is set to sign off as Everton caretaker in Saturday’s visit of Arsenal with Carlo Ancelotti expected to take the reins permanently thereafter.
Since Marco Silva’s departure, the former striker has delivered a three-game unbeaten run in all competitions despite bowing out on penalties to Leicester.
And Ferguson admits that confidence was key to building up a run which has provided an uplift in the mood at Goodison Park during the previous 15 days.
“When you get a result everybody gets behind it,” he added.
“If you don’t get your first result, the confidence drops again. We managed to get a confident performance against Chelsea.
“We started really well, we got an early goal so that gave everybody a boost and we’ve just continued that.”
