Ferguson’s Everton caretaker spell extended

Duncan Ferguson will continue to take charge of Everton’s first-team matters.

Ferguson was appointed caretaker in the wake of Marco Silva’s sacking last Thursday and presided over a 3-1 win against Chelsea less than 48 hours later.

The legendary Blues striker turned coach has discounted the possibility of taking the reins on a long-term basis in the current search for Silva’s replacement.

But Ferguson will oversee Sunday’s trip to Manchester United with several of his former Goodison Park teammates continuing to serve as interim backroom staff.

His exploits in masterminding the Chelsea victory may afford Farhad Moshiri further time to continue his search for Everton’s next permanent manager.

A swift turnaround between the Old Trafford encounter and the Carabao Cup quarter-final with Leicester City could see Ferguson take charge for a third game.

Ahead of the clash with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side, the 47-year-old outlined the need for Everton to build on their Chelsea win with a similar game plan.

He said: “We have to make sure we create chances and get in the final third. We can do that. Going away to Old Trafford is tough at any time.

“United have had a lot of positive results recently. They are off the back of a derby win and a top team, so it is going to be incredibly difficult.

“But the players are up for it. Saturday was a fantastic result for us and we have confidence because we won the game.

“We have continued the feel-good factor [in training] and that is what happens when you get a result.”
