Walsh faces sack as Everton director of football

Steve Walsh is under increasing scrutiny as Everton’s director of football.

Walsh was appointed to the newly-created role at Goodison Park in summer 2016 on the back of his role in Leicester City’s Premier League title win.

But a botched recruitment policy which has run into almost £240 million under the talent spotter’s watch threatens to see his role with the Blues terminated.

Last month’s £28m signing of Cenk Tosun appears to have continued the theme, with the ex-Besiktas striker struggling to adapt to life in the Premier League.

Everton’s majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri is understood to be conducting a review into Walsh’s position on the back of last summer’s transfer drive.

Only five European clubs have spent more on players in the previous two transfer windows than the Toffees’ figure of close to £200m.

Although a potential successor to Walsh is yet to be lined up, PSV Eindhoven’s Marcel Brands has been regularly linked with a role at Goodison in recent weeks.
