McCarthy set to go under the knife

James McCarthy will undergo surgery on his double leg break on Monday.

The Everton midfielder sustained the injury midway through the second half of his side’s draw with West Brom when chasing back to stop Salomon Rondon.

Stretching to deny Rondon a goal-scoring opportunity, McCarthy was accidentally struck in his right leg, breaking both his tibia and fibula in the process.

The West Brom striker was left visibly distressed by the incident, which Sam Allardyce later admitting that he feared it had ended McCarthy’s season.

Allardyce claimed it would be up to the specialists to determine when surgery on the Republic of Ireland international’s injury would be carried out.

That has now been scheduled for sometime on Monday, with Everton keen to start McCarthy’s rehabilitation from the injury as soon as possible.

Confimation of how long the 27-year-old will spend on the sidelines remains undetermined but similar injuries, such as the one sustained by Seamus Coleman, have seen players miss upwards of a year.
