Everton have confirmed that James McCarthy has suffered a double leg break.
McCarthy went down following a collision with West Brom striker Salomon Rondon during the second half of the Blues’ 1-1 draw on Saturday.
The clash left Rondon visibly distressed on the pitch with replays later showing his efforts to strike the ball inadvertently broke the midfielder’s leg.
Sam Allardyce confirmed that McCarthy will miss the rest of this season in the wake of the injury.
He said: “It’s a double fracture, tibia and fibula.
“We will do it (surgery) as quick as we possibly can. That very much depends on the specialist or the surgeon.
“His tibs and fibs were broken because of his efforts to stop West Brom scoring. He’s paid a heavy price for his commitment.
“It’s a big blow for him and for us. He’s had so many games missed, with not so serious injuries that we thought we’d overcome.
“This is one serious injury that we know will keep him out until next season some stage.
“That’s a big blow.”
