Everton fined by UEFA after Lyon skirmishes

Everton have been fined by UEFA for fan misbehaviour in their defeat to Lyon.

A supporter appeared to strike out at goalkeeper Anthony Lopes during the Blues’ 2-1 reversal to the French side in the Europa League group stages.

Television pictures showed the man holding a child in one arm attempting to swing at Lopes during an on-field melee in front of the Gwladys Street stand.

Merseyside Police interviewed a 30-year-old man under suspicion of assault and affray as part of their own probe. He was later released under investigation.

UEFA’s control, ethics and disciplinary body confirmed on Wednesday that the Goodison Park club were guilty of ‘aggressions by supporters against players’.

European football’s regulatory chiefs imposed a £26,600 penalty on Everton, who are yet to appoint a permanent replacement for manager Ronald Koeman.

The news came on the same day that the Football Association rejected Oumar Niasse’s appeal against a ban for the ‘successful deception of a match official’.

Niasse will serve a two-game ban for the charge, which relates to a penalty won by the striker during his side’s 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace last weekend.
