Everton seeking home comforts to improve form

David Unsworth hopes Everton’s return to Goodison Park can spark an upturn in fortunes.

Sunday’s visit of Watford will be the Blues’ first game on home soil since Ronald Koeman was sacked in the wake of a 5-2 hammering by Arsenal.

Unsworth has since taken temporary charge and presided over an early Europa League exit, with Everton still in the Premier League’s relegation zone.

But the Toffees’ caretaker is eager to harness the power of Goodison for the encounter with Marco Silva’s side this weekend.

He said: “It will be great to get back to Goodison Park.

“I can’t wait to stand there in front of 40,000 Evertonians, who I know will get behind everybody on Sunday afternoon.

“Sunday’s a massive game for the club. It’s a great game, a great opportunity to get back to winning ways, and Sunday’s about Everton Football Club.

“We need a win for the fans, we need a win for the players desperately to give them some confidence and we all need to come together.

“Goodison is an amazing place to play football. I know it like the back of my hand and when our fans get behind us, there’s no better place to play your football.”

Hornets manager Silva is among a host of names touted to take the reins at Everton, with a successor potentially in-place after the international break.

Unsworth, who guided the club’s under-23 side to Premier League 2 success, has made no secret of his desire to be given the role on a permanent basis.

‘I spoke to the chairman last night. I talk to him every day, which is great,” added Unsworth.

“He’s been a great support and so have all the board members. Everybody’s been fantastic, communication has been great.

“Hopefully we’ll all sit down and sort what’s best for the club in the international window. The sooner it’s resolved, the better for everybody.

“I know the chairman and the board will make a decision that’s best for the football club – and I’ll accept that.

“If it’s me, great, if it’s somebody else who can help the team do better, fantastic.”
