Idrissa Gueye is ‘very close’ to agreeing terms with Everton over a new contract.
Gueye quickly established himself as a key component in the Blues’ starting line-up following his £7.1 million move from Aston Villa in summer 2016.
The Senegal international’s influence has led the Goodison Park hierarchy to move quickly to seal his future with discussions taking place over several weeks.
Everton’s interim manager David Unsworth confirmed on Friday that an improved deal is imminent for Gueye, whose current one expires in 2020.
He said: “I believe we are very close, which is fantastic news for Everton.
“I don’t believe it’s signed and sealed but it’s close and that’s great news for Idrissa, for me and everyone at Everton because he’s a top, top player.
“He’s been great over a period of time. I’ve watched his performances over the last 18 months and the season he was at Aston Villa.
“He’s a top player and to tie him down to stay for a number of years is fantastic.
“He’s a good guy as well, he’s really humble and he’ll be a top Everton player.”
