Koeman ‘very disappointed’ with Wayne Rooney

Ronald Koeman admits that Wayne Rooney’s drink-driving charge has left him ‘very disappointed’.

Rooney will return to Everton action against Tottenham on Saturday, little over a week after he was arrested by police while driving near his Cheshire home.

The 31-year-old is set to appear at Stockport Magistrates’ Court on September 18, the day after he travels with the Blues to his former club Manchester United.

Reading from a pre-written statement, Koeman addressed the situation which saw Rooney’s Goodison Park return hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons.

He said: “Obviously I am very disappointed by this situation regarding Wayne Rooney.

“We have spoken on Tuesday and the chairman Bill Kenwright spoke also to Wayne about this situation.

“In line with any disciplinary matter this will be dealt with internally at an appropriate time and that is all I have to say about the case of Wayne Rooney.”

The Everton manager also confirmed that Rooney, who called time on his England career last month, is set to start against Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

“He will play this Saturday,” added Koeman.

“If I see that Wayne is not in a physical or mental condition to play then he won’t play.”
