I didn’t rejoin Everton FC to retire, insists Rooney

Wayne Rooney insists that he is ‘not coming to a retirement home’ at Everton.

The Blues forward rejoined his boyhood club on Sunday following a 13-year spell with Manchester United in which he became England’s leading goalscorer.

Rooney’s homecoming was preceded by a limited amount of playing time for both club and country over the previous 12 months.

But the 31-year-old has dismissed suggestions that his feted Goodison Park return is driven by a desire to ease into the twilight on his career.

He said: “I’m not coming into a retirement home.

“I want to play, win and be successful. I feel good.

“I’m not fit at the moment but that will build up in the next few weeks.

“I’m excited. I think it’s the right time and I’m ready for it.”

Rooney, who takes over the number 10 shirt vacated by Romelu Lukaku, also claims that winning a trophy with Everton would surpass all other honours.

The Champions League and English title winner is keen to end the Toffees’ silverware drought which has stretched back to the 1995 FA Cup triumph.

“It would be extra special to win something at Everton. I think that would be the pinnacle of my career,” he added.

“As an Everton fan I was at the final in 1995 and I know what it would bring for the city and the fans it would be a great feeling.

“I’m delighted to be back. It’s a great feeling for me. It’s an exciting time for both myself and the football club.

“I can’t wait to put the shirt on again and go and play.”
