Wayne Rooney believes Everton are capable of ending their quest for silverware next season.
The England international secured his long-awaited return to the Blues on Sunday following 13 success-laden years with Manchester United.
During his absence, Goodison Park’s wait for a trophy has now extended to well over two decades since Joe Royle’s FA Cup-winning side of 1995.
But with a place in the Europa League up for grabs as well as three major domestic honours to contest, Rooney believes Everton could soon right that wrong.
He said: “I firmly believe we have the potential to be a success in the league and there’s the cup competitions.
“We’re certainly capable of winning one of those cups. You have to take it step by step.
“It’s a difficult set of fixtures to start the season, so we have to make sure we get a good pre-season so we’re capable of starting well.”
The 31-year-old has also admitted that he was relishing the prospect of a return to his boyhood club.
“Throughout the summer I’ve been working out where I was going to go,” added Rooney.
“I spoke to my agent and said: ‘Listen, you need to speak to Everton, see if it can happen’.
“He said it could so I told him to speak to the club and get it done as quickly as possible. It’s happened, I’m delighted and I’m ready to go.”
