Roberto Martinez was confronted by an Everton supporter during the club’s under-21 fixture with Chelsea last night.
Frustration with the under-fire Blues boss has intensified in recent weeks, with fans unfurling a ‘Martinez Out’ banner before last weekend’s 1-1 draw with Watford.
And in a further manifestation of the growing anger felt at Everton’s under-performing, with the club now languishing 14th in the Premier League table, one fan took issue with Martinez as he took in the game at Southport’s Merseyrail Community Stadium.
Video footage emerged on social media that the appeared to show the supporter confronting the former Wigan manager, who was joined by assistant Graham Jones for the game.
On the pitch, Everton’s under-21s ran out comfortable 2-0 winners against a highly rated Chelsea team – the visitors’ first league defeat since November.
Second-half goals from defenders Callum Connolly and Mason Holgate were enough to secure an impressive victory for David Unsworth’s men, who welcomed back Belgian winger David Henen from a loan spell with League One side Fleetwood Town.
The win leaves Unsworth’s team in fourth place in the Barclays U21 Premier League, a point behind Manchester City in third.
