Everton FC to take on Groningen in friendly

Everton will face FC Groningen in a pre-season friendly in mid-July.

Ronald Koeman is set to return to his native Holland and the club where both he and brother Erwin originally began their respective playing careers.

The Blues manager and his assistant will take their side to the Noordlease Stadion on July 22 as the Eredivisie club confirmed on Monday.

It has also been claimed that Everton will face two other Dutch sides with games against PEC Zwolle and FC Twente pencilled in for July 16 and 19 respectively.

Hans Nijland, Groningen’s managing director, said: “On Saturday, July 22, we want to have the pitch again in order for a beautiful practice match at the Noordlease Stadium.

“That’s because Premier League club Everton from Ronald and Erwin Koeman will visit.”

However Goodison Park officials insist that no fixtures have been arranged.

“At this moment, contrary to reports, we have no confirmed games in Holland during our pre-season programme,” read a club statement.

“Supporters are advised not to book any travel under any circumstances until there is confirmation from the club.”

Everton have already confirmed games in Tanzania and a home friendly with Sevilla as part of their prepations for the new Premier League season.
