New Everton FC kit to pay Dixie Dean tribute

Dixie Dean’s contribution to Everton will be celebrated in the club’s new home kit.

Launching on May 16, the Blues’ strip for the 2017/18 season is set to include a motif of its record-breaking striker on the back of the shirt’s collar.

Dean comfortably remains the leading goal scorer in Goodison Park’s all-time history, famously recording 60 league goals in the 1927/28 campaign.

Kit manufacturers Umbro offered Everton supporters the chance to shape aspects of the new strip’s design from votes through the club’s official Fans’ Forum.

A silhouette of Dean scooped 47 per cent of votes in a poll which also offered the ‘People’s Club’ motto and an early Everton crest as alternative designs.

Nick Mernock, chair of the Fans’ Forum, said: “Dixie Dean is an Everton icon and his presence on the home shirt will ensure we can continue to tell his story to a new generation of Blues.

“It’s great that Evertonians have had the chance to put a stamp on this season’s kit and thousands of supporters have already had their say on kits for the 17/18 season through a supporter-wide survey.

“We look forward to seeing the influence fans have had on those strips next season.”

The late marksman’s daughter Barbara Dean gave her backing to the idea in a presentation of the new design at Goodison on Tuesday.

She said: “We’re all just so proud to know that he is still held in such high regard by Evertonians.

“The whole family are delighted and can’t wait to get their hands on a new number nine shirt.

“He was just a normal, down-to-earth bloke. He used to get the bus over here and go in the local pubs.

“He was loved by normal people and he was very understanding of what was going on in the world and the hardships people faced, he really felt for people.

“He had a real connection with the fans and the club and knew that football brought them out.

“In some cases it was the only thing that they had to keep them going. He was the best, and still is!”
