FIFA to pay Coleman’s Everton FC wages during lay-off

FIFA are set to cover Seamus Coleman’s Everton salary during his injury lay-off.

Coleman faces a minimum of six months on the sidelines after suffering a double leg break in the Republic of Ireland’s World Cup qualifier with Wales.

The Blues defender required surgery to repair his fractured his tibia and fibula from the challenge from Neil Taylor in last Friday’s Dublin encounter.

World football’s governing body will allow Everton officials to reclaim Coleman’s current salary, understood to be £50,000 per week, as part of its Club Protection Programme.

The scheme allows clubs to recoup the current wages of players that suffer a prolonged injury while representing their country for up to 12 months with a limit of over £112,000 per week – more than double Coleman’s current earnings.

Ireland boss Martin O’Neill believes the 28-year-old will remain in hospital for several more days as he comes to terms with the impact of the season-ending tackle.

He said: “He’s just coming to terms with it, he’s still pretty down. He’s not in as much pain and the operation went very well.

“It’s just a matter of coming to terms with the fact he is not going to be playing again for a long period of time.

“That is difficult, but he is slowly getting his head round what has happened.

“I’ve not communicated directly with Everton, but the medical staff have.

“It’s a bad blow for the player, it’s a bad blow for Everton and us. He was missed even in the last couple of days around the place.

“He’s very, very positive person and he has a very strong family around him who will help him get back too.

“He is keen to get on to the recovery road as soon as possible, but I think he will be in hospital for a few more days before that can happen.”
