Ronald Koeman has told Phil Jagielka that he must still carry out his duties as Everton captain even when he is not playing.
Jagielka’s first-team prospects have been limited since the turn of the year, with his only appearance coming as a late substitute in January’s win over Crystal Palace.
Ramiro Funes Mori has usurped the England international at the heart of the Blues defence since his last start, a 2-2 draw with Hull City at the end of 2016.
But Koeman insists that Jagielka, 34, is duty-bound to retain his leadership qualities for Everton, irrespective of his current playing status.
He said: “Phil is positive. I spoke with him and spoke about his role and about his function.
“Even when he doesn’t start, I expect him as captain for the team and he is showing his commitment to the team.
“Of course he is disappointed like everybody who is not starting or on the bench.
“But he needs to wait for his opportunity and until then show his quality and leadership also out of the pitch.”
