Everton FC icon Alex Young passes away

Alex Young, synonymous with Everton as ‘The Golden Vision’, has died.

The striker enjoyed a memorable eight-year spell with the Blues in the 1960s, when he scored a combined 87 goals from 273 appearances for the club.

During that time he was part of Harry Catterick’s side which won the 1963 League Championship and the Charity Shield just months later.

But his finest achievement in a royal blue shirt came as a part of the team which overcame a two-goal deficit to beat Sheffield Wednesday in the 1966 FA Cup final.

His Goodison Park playing career was immortalised by lending his Golden Vision nickname to Ken Loach’s iconic docu-drama about the club.

Young passed away peacefully in his native Edinburgh at the age of 80, his family have confirmed.

“We are all very sad and will miss him terribly,” said his son Alex junior.

“He passed away peacefully with my mum by his side at a small hospital close to Edinburgh. He has been ill for a few weeks but he battled on bravely.

“It’s still very raw but I wanted people on Merseyside to know.

“He loved Everton, he loved being back at Goodison Park.

“He always said it was like going to church.”
