Two men arrested in Goodison pitch protest

Two people were arrested after a protestor stopped play at Goodison Park.

A 21-year-old man ran onto the pitch and chained himself to one of the goal posts during Thursday’s game between Everton and Newcastle United.

The match was temporarily halted as a result of the encroachment, which saw police and stewards attempting to release the demonstrator with box cutters.

He was later led away by officers, who detained him suspicion of pitch encroachment alongside a 39-year-old man on suspicion of assault.

Everton went on to win the game through Alex Iwobi’s goal, which arrived during 14 minutes of stoppages added on as a result of the in-game protest.
